Overview
A CFD simulation of a centrifugal water pump to analyse its internal flow characteristics and pressure distribution. The study identifies areas of high and low pressure within the impeller and the volute casing, which supports the optimisation of pump efficiency, the prevention of cavitation and overall hydraulic performance.
What the model shows
- Internal flow: how the water moves through the volute casing and the impeller, shown as streamlines coloured by velocity.
- Pressure distribution: the areas of high and low pressure inside the pump.
Why it matters
Where the local pressure falls below the vapour pressure of the water, vapour bubbles form and collapse. This is called cavitation, and it damages the impeller and reduces efficiency. Mapping the low-pressure regions shows where that risk lies, and the same pressure and flow fields guide changes to the impeller and casing that raise efficiency.
